We are seeking a dynamic, innovative, self-motivated, and results-oriented social scientist to work on improving the livelihoods of maize and wheat farmers in the developing world and particularly in Latin America. The position focuses on social science research for development to raise agricultural productivity, profitability and sustainability, particularly through improved seed and sustainable intensification. You will explore technological and institutional innovations that increase productivity and improve access to markets for resource-poor farmers, help us and policy makers understand the key constraints to agricultural development, and translate your vision into a productive and exciting research agenda. You will support the innovative Sustainable Modernization of Traditional Agriculture (MasAgro) Project in Mexico, and particularly to Take it To the Farmer (TTF). You will work as a member of CIMMYT’s Socio-Economics Program in close collaboration with CIMMYT’s Global Conservation Agriculture Program and Genetic Resources Program with public, private, local, and international partners.

The position will be based at CIMMYT’s Main Campus (located 45 km northeast of Mexico City, Mexico), will predominantly work in Mexico and Central America, and interact with CIMMYT´s regional offices world-wide on a regular basis.


Specific duties and responsibilities of the position are to perform applied and strategic social science research for development to enhance technology and policy interventions. Specific research topics include:


  • Understand the determinants of technology development, adoption and adaptation by farmers.

  • Understand impact pathways and differential impacts of agricultural productivity intensification on income, poverty, gender equality, food security and nutrition.

  • Identify institutional innovations and strategies to enhance farmers' access to and use of improved seeds and other inputs, conservation agriculture, and better markets for surplus produce.

  • Identify how technological interventions occur for different type of farmers and propose strategies to consider those who are normally excluded (like women and indigenous people).

  • Develop research projects jointly with other programs on topic such as agro biodiversity and genetic resources.

  • Present socio-economic work, project approaches and conduct trainings in internal as well as external workshops.

  • Contribute to quantitative and qualitative survey design, conduct and analyze primary as well as secondary data.

  • Contribute to R&D projects with an innovation system framework by applying interdisciplinary, applied, and participatory research.

  • Contribute to the development of concept notes and proposals on relevant research topics.

  • Publish findings in international peer reviewed journals.

  • Assisting the TTF-socioeconomic management team with research management.


We are seeking candidates with the following academic qualifications, skills and attitudes:


  • PhD in Social Sciences or a related field from a recognized institution with background on Agronomy and/or Genetic Resources.

  • Applied and relevant research-for-development experience during PhD and earlier career/studies working with marginal groups.

  • Experience with public-private partnerships and good skills to work and promote collaborative research.

  • Good partnership skills, including the ability to moderate meetings with partners.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

  • A high degree of personal organization and the ability to multi-task and work under pressure, as well as travel extensively.

  • Ability to work with people of different nationalities, disciplines, and education levels as a member of a diverse work team.

  • Demonstrated knowledge about agriculture and grain production in Mexico/Latin America.

  • Promising publication record.


The position is for a contract of two (2) years, after which further employment is subject to performance and the continued availability of funds.
